This elevated cinema as a respectable art form but this movement also retarded cinematic technique by sticking strictly to stage conventions and not exploiting what can be done with a camera. As with other nations Germany’s cinema started to take off when the Film D’art movement was occuring. Many of the films were almost pornographic in nature. It was not respected by any of the more intelligent segments of society.
A large part of this is due to the fact that German film at the time was a refuge for the unemployed, illiterate, and other lower class segments of society. After film began to take off around the world at the begining of the century German film was left behind.
